About Form in Stone

Form in Stone is a new independent editorial publication about stone sculpture, carving and architectural ornament. It is written for readers who want to understand how carved objects were made, what materials they are made from and how they function in buildings and public settings. The publication has no affiliation with any museum, collection or sculptor, and it makes no claim of authorship over the objects it discusses. Every article is an editorial interpretation based on published sources, visible evidence and clearly stated reasoning about technique, material or context. We aim to be precise, approachable and concrete. We do not offer medical advice or prescriptive procedures for gas, electrical or structural installation. Our subject is the reading of stone sculpture: tools and workshop practice, stone types and their properties, and the architectural, devotional and memorial settings that give carved ornament its meaning. Illustrative images or diagrams may be synthetic and are used to clarify a technique, proportion or surface effect. They are not photographs of specific objects unless explicitly identified as such. Where we discuss a historical work, we try to separate what can be observed from what is inferred. This publication is a reading project, not a catalogue raisonné.
